SATURDAY, MAY 6 AT T-MOBILE ARENA IN LAS VEGAS
PRESENTED LIVE BY HBO PAY-PER-VIEW®

LOS ANGELES (March 27, 2017) – Less than two months after delivering the top knockout of 2017, Canadian knockout artist David Lemieux (37-3, 33 KOs) will return in a 10-round fight against Marco “Dorado” Reyes (34-4, 25 KOs) as the chief support to the highly anticipated battle between Canelo Álvarez and Julio Cesar Chávez, Jr. on Saturday, May 6. The mega-event will be produced and distributed live by HBO Pay-Per-View beginning at 9:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. PT.

Opening up the stacked Cinco de Mayo weekend card at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, former U.S. Olympian and current undefeated NABF Featherweight champion Joseph “JoJo” Diaz, Jr. (23-0, 13 KOs) will face perhaps his toughest challenge to date when he defends his title against the undefeated Manuel “Tino” Avila (22-0, 8 KOs) in a 10-round battle.

These two fights along with the main event and the previously announced brawl between Argentinian slugger Lucas “La Maquina” Matthysse (37-4, 34 KOs) and Emmanuel “Tranzformer” Taylor (20-4, 14 KOs) will round out the pay-per-view telecast on Saturday May 6.

“With three of Golden Boy Promotions’ most exciting contenders appearing on the pay-per-view, as well as the biggest star in the sport, Canelo Álvarez, the Cinco de Mayo card can be described in one word, ‘stacked’,” said Golden Boy Promotions Chairman and CEO Oscar De La Hoya. “I fully expect four action-packed fights that will have fans out of their seats for the entire evening.”

The hard-hitting Lemieux is riding a three-fight winning streak and was last seen delivering a thunderous third-round knockout of the highly touted Curtis “Cerebral Assassin” Stevens that has put the Canadian directly back into the title picture.

“I’m thankful to have the opportunity of being part of this event during the Cinco de Mayo celebrations,” Lemieux said. “I think I was able to send a clear message on March 11 with my performance against Stevens and I intend to do the same on May 6. I want to make sure that everyone understands that David Lemieux is making his way towards the top and that he intends to stay there.”

Reyes, a 29-year-old former WBC FECOMBOX middleweight champion, has knocked out 25 opponents and went toe-to-toe with Chavez, Jr., in a unanimous decision defeat that many spectators had closer than what came up on the scorecards.

“I know everyone is talking about the Lemieux knockout, but I’m ready to take him out,” Reyes said. “With my Mexican fans supporting me on Cinco de Mayo weekend, I’m ready to turn Lemieux’s lights out.”

“Following his performance against Curtis ‘The Cerebral Assassin’ Stevens at Turning Stone Resort Casino, fight fans wanted to see David in the ring again as soon as possible,” said Eye of the Tiger Management President Camille Estephan. “Being part of such a tremendous card that will be featured on May 6 with eyes on us from all around the world represents an incredible showcase opportunity. We are convinced that David will shine. He is in great shape and is more motivated than ever to conquer the top of the middleweight division,”

In the opening battle of the HBO Pay-Per-View telecast, two undefeated fighters will go toe-to-toe with both Joseph Diaz, Jr. and Manuel Avila risking their undefeated records for a chance at greater glory.

“I’m excited to return for the first time in 2017 and put my title on the line against such a tough competitor,” Diaz, Jr. said. “This fight will put me one step closer to a world title shot.”

“This is a golden opportunity to move myself into world title contention, and I’m not planning to let that chance slip away,” Avila said. “I know all about JoJo’s undefeated record, but he’s never faced anyone like me, and at the end of the night, my hand will be raised in victory.”

Preliminary bouts for the May 6 show will be announced in the coming weeks.

Tickets for a closed circuit viewing of the fights at the Grand Ballroom at MGM Grand Hotel & Casino are on sale for $75, not including applicable fees. All seats are general admission and can be purchased at the MGM Grand box office or by phone with a major credit card at 800-745-3000.

Canelo vs. Chávez, Jr. is a 12-round fight presented by Golden Boy Promotions and sponsored by Tecate, BORN BOLD, O’Reilly Auto Parts, Adriana’s Insurance and Interjet. Lemieux vs. Reyes is a 10-round bout presented by Golden Boy Promotions in association with Eye of the Tiger Management. Matthysse vs. Taylor is a 10-round fight present by Golden Boy Promotions in association with Arano Boxing and Star Boxing. The event will take place on Saturday, May 6 at T-Mobile Arena and will be produced and distributed live by HBO Pay-Per-View® beginning at 9:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. PT.

Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez Q&A

March 10, 2017

Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez Q&A

1. This is your first training camp without your long-time trainer, Arnulfo Obando, who tragically passed away in October. This must have been extremely difficult for you on a personal level when that happened. Professionally, did it take much time to decide how to proceed?

Roman/ It was very difficult for me on a personal and professional level. Arnulfo was my trainer, friend, and father like figure in my life. This was my first training camp without him and I knew he would be happy if we kept on training hard like he taught us and keep winning in God’s name. With God on our team, these events become motivational.

2. Now that your father is your head trainer, and with the rest of the team remaining the same, are you essentially continuing to follow the same blueprint Arnulfo laid down or have there been any differences?

Roman/ My head trainer is Wilmer Hernandez, my father is my assistant trainer. The blueprint was made by dad, developed by Alexis Arguello and continued by Arnulfo, now the torch has been past to Wilmer. Wilmer has followed the same footsteps, but has also added a little of his style.

3. You were on a lengthy knockout streak, against top-quality opposition. In your last two fights, you have been taken the distance, and in your last outing, you were in your closest, toughest fight for years. Do you feel that you still have the same power that you had? Are you noticing any differences with fighting at 115 lbs?

Roman/ I believe every fight is different and every rival has their talent. I believe God gives me the same strength and blessing to train for each fight. The only difference I see in 115 is that more rivals are willing to fight me, which I believe is a true blessing.

4. Not very many American fans will be familiar with your opponent, Srisaket Sor Rungvisai. What do you know about him?

Roman/ I had seen videos on him since I was studying his fight with Cuadras. He is very strong and always moves forward with courage. He is a southpaw which is also an extra challenge to this fight, that is why we are training very hard.

5. There will be a lot of attention paid to the fact that you and Carlos Cuadras are on the same card. Clearly, the intention appears to be to steer the two of you toward a rematch. Are you open to that, and if you both win on March 18, do you expect that to be your next fight?

Roman/ I am very happy that Carlos is going to fight on the same card. I wish him the best always. Right now I am focused on Rungvisai. Yes, I am open to a rematch with Carlos.

6. It has been quite the couple of years. You have been beloved and appreciated by Nicaraguan boxing fans and knowledgeable fans in the United States for a while; but now, you have been fighting in the States on HBO, and are widely regarded as the very best boxer in the world. What has this been like for you on a personal level?

Roman/ A true blessing. The glory belongs to God, he gave me this talent and it is overwhelming to be considered as one of the best.

7. March 18 will be your second appearance at Madison Square Garden in New York. In the US, the Garden is regarded as the most historic venue in boxing; what does it mean to you to be fighting there?

Roman/ Just to be fighting is a true blessing, even more so to be fighting in such an iconic place. I have always admired the Garden since I was little.

Conor McGregor to Floyd Mayweather: ‘Don’t ever bring race into my success again’

Conor McGregor didn't mince words in his response to Floyd Mayweather after the former pound-for-pound boxing king said that racism played a part in the Irishman's rise to fame.

Conor McGregor didn’t mince words in his response to Floyd Mayweather after the former pound-for-pound boxing king said that racism played a part in the Irishman’s rise to fame.

Mayweather’s comments started out aimed at his own sport of boxing, but he eventually turned his ire toward former UFC champion Ronda Rousey and McGregor, calling reactions to his trash talk “biased” compared to the vitriol Mayweather received during his career for making similar remarks.

McGregor fired back on Friday night via an Instagram post where he took direct aim at Mayweather’s comments and responded in kind by reminding the boxing champion of the prejudices he’s dealt with his entire life growing up in Ireland.

“Floyd Mayweather, don’t ever bring race into my success again,” McGregor said. “I am an Irishman. My people have been oppressed our entire existence. And still very much are. I understand the feeling of prejudice. It is a feeling that is deep in my blood.

“In my family’s long history of warfare, there was a time where just having the name ‘McGregor’ was punishable by death. Do not ever put me in a bracket like this again.”

The UFC featherweight champion wasn’t finished with his tirade either, because he then challenged Mayweather to a fight while trashing the retired boxer’s last bout, against Andre Berto, which earned paltry numbers on pay-per-view by comparison to most of his fights and didn’t sell out the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

McGregor has welcomed a fight with Mayweather in the past, and the outspoken Irish fighter certainly didn’t back down this time either while issuing another offer to the undefeated boxer.

“At 27 years of age, I now hold the key to this game. The game answers to me now.”

As of yet, Mayweather hasn’t responded to McGregor’s post.
