Chip Kelly and Mike Shanahan reach out to 49ers

Chip Kelly and Mike Shanahan have both expressed interesest in the San Francisco 49ers’ vacant head coaching position, according to multiple reports.

The job became available when 49ers CEO Jed York announced Jim Tomsula’s stint in Santa Clara would be a one-season affair on Sunday. The 49ers finished 5-11 this season, capped by a 19-16 overtime victory over the the St. Louis Rams at Levi’s Stadium.

Kelly was fired last week by the Eagles, one game short of three full seasons in Philadelphia. Shanahan, a former 49ers offensive coordinator and two-time Super Bowl champ with the Denver Broncos, last coached with the Washington Redskins, who relieved him of his duties after the 2013 season.

Fox Sports’ Alex Marvez reported that Shanahan has a second interview with the Dolphins scheduled for Tuesday.

Starter Colin Kaepernick missed much of the season after he had surgery on his non-throwing shoulder. He struggled before the injury minus Jim Harbaugh, who parted ways with San Francisco following last season and was hired by Michigan. The 49ers have missed the playoffs for consecutive seasons and a new coach would inherit a quarterback controversy.

Kaepernick is signed through the 2020 season and has a cap hit of $16 million next season. There have been reports that the team would ask Kaepernick to restructure his deal. Blaine Gabbert finished the season as the 49ers’ starting quarterback.

The Jets had a “win and in” and they lost to Buffalo, so the Steelers clinch the final berth with their win over the Browns.

The playoff fields are set, with the Vikings the surprising NFC North winner.

NFC

1. y — Carolina Panthers (15-1): This will be the first time they have had home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.

2. y — Arizona Cardinals (13-3): With the NFC West and a first-round bye now in hand, they seemingly went through the motions against Seattle. At least they hope that’s the reason.

3. — Minnesota Vikings (11-5): Their prize for wining NFC North: Seahawks in the wild-card game.

4. — Washington Redskins (9-7): The Redskins locked up the NFC East by beating the Philadelphia Eagles on Saturday night, ensuring they’ll host the No. 5 seed.

5. — Green Bay Packers (10-6): The struggles on offense dropped them to wild-card status.

6.— Seattle Seahawks (10-6):  Seattle is hoping for a repeat of an earlier drubbing of the Vikings.

AFC

1. y— Denver Broncos (12-4):  Peyton Manning saves the day, wins the West and now the AFC goes through Denver.

2. y — New England Patriots (12-4):  The AFC East champs lost two in a row and failed to clinch home-field advantage. But they still get a bye.

3. — Cincinnati Bengals (12-4):  Cincinnati faces a tough test in the wild-card week against rival Pittsburgh.

4. — Houston Texans (9-7): The AFC South champs will get to host the Chiefs in the wild-card round.

5. — Kansas City Chiefs (11-5):  Kansas City missed out on winning the west, but they ride a 10-game win streak into the playoffs.

6. — Pittsburgh Steelers (10-6): The Jets’ loss in Buffalo cleared the way for them to secure final playoff spot, and then the Steelers took care of business against the Browns.
